There is often a misconception with small businesses that “If you build it, they will come”. Well, that only works for Kevin Costner (in the movies...if you've seen Field of Dreams, you understand this reference). So many businesses with great food, products or services fold simply because not enough people know about them...and word of mouth only gets you but so far. Marketing is a must!!!
When launching a new business, it is imperative you get the word out to your target audience. You need to convey your story in order to capture their attention. We learned in grade school in order to tell a 'complete' story, you had to answer the 5 W's (who, what, where, when and why)...& that really applies here as well.
Who: Who are you? Define your business.
What: What does your business offer...what are you selling? What is it about your product or services you want to communicate?
Where: Where are you located? Whether brick and mortar or online...where can they purchase your goods or services?
When: When are you open? If you are launching a new business, it is critical to communicate grand opening and event dates as well as store hours well in advance.
Why: Why should they come to you? Why is your business special...what makes your business or product or service unique? Why did you start your business?
Marketing starts long before your business launches and is an ongoing aspect of every business. It is important to all businesses, but it is VITAL to the very survival of every small business!
